Dear Parents/Guardians:

I am your child’s Language Arts teacher for the year, and I am delighted to have your child in my class. I am looking forward to a very successful year, and I know you are too. A little background on myself: I grew up in the Coeur d’Alene area, graduated from Coeur d’Alene high school, then attended the University of Montana - Missoula where I received a degree in Teaching English Literature: Secondary Education and teaching Reading K-12. I taught in Montana for six years, five of which were at a private, college preparatory school. I view the opportunity to teach at STEM an incredible privilege; the mission of STEM directly aligns with my teaching philosophy.

I have high expectations for all of my students, and I will do all that I can to help them achieve their greatest academic potential.  There are high writing standards at this school, and students are encouraged to ask questions.

Throughout this year, students will be researching scientific, historical, and contemporary topics to write about, as well as receiving a good base in classical literature.  The primary goal of my classes is to prepare students for their continued high school and future college level reading and writing.  Assignment instructions, rubrics, reading material, and helpful resources will be available through your student’s Google Classroom. This is also where announcements and/or reminders will be posted.

I expect all work assigned to be completed and turned in on time. The way you can help is to ask your child every school day if schoolwork needs to be done, and, if so, make sure your child completes the assignment. If he/she says they have completed the assigned work, ask them to teach you!

Your help and support will not only make your child more successful in school this year but will instill good study habits that will last a lifetime.

I cannot wait to begin working with all of my students.  This will be a fantastic year!

Finally, although I highly encourage and expect my students to self-advocate as it is their education, the lines of communication are always open. Please contact me at if you have any questions or concerns during the year.
