Happy New Year!

I hope everyone enjoyed their break!

We will be continuing our research project: A Presidential Portrait.  All research should be done by Thursday.  We will begin writing our rough draft and I will be taking grades on the prewrite (the research pages with MLA format on top) and the book source.  This writing assignment will have a presentation.  Be thinking about how you want to share the information you learned about your president.  A visual aid of your choice is required as well.

We will also continue our states and capitals and presidents.  Keep reviewing them.

There is no new Caesar's lesson this week.  We will have a quiz on Monday and continue with our lessons next week.

We will review any rules or expectations as needed due to the long break.

Be safe out there on the ice!

History Routine

The history routine with regard to test corrections has changed effective immediately.  Please see the updated document in my locker "Our History Routine."

ALL STUDENTS will need to do test corrections for all wrong or incomplete answers.  Test corrections are positive statements in complete sentences written 5x each and are worth 10 points.

Welcome Back!

Welcome to 5th Grade!

All 5th grade students will have me for Language Arts and Social Studies.  Mr. Brown will have your students for Math and Science.

To help make our first day run a little smoother, please have your student label their notebooks and folders at home so we can jump right into learning!

Your student will need 3 notebooks for my classes.  Please label notebooks as follows: write the student name and subject on the front cover.  Hint: if you have dark covers, a white adhesive mailing label will make the information show up great!  It is always a good idea to purchase a few extra notebooks when they are on sale to have on hand.  Students who write large may need an extra notebook during the year.

Language Arts (or LA)

Social Studies

Two folders will need to be labeled as well with student name and subject on front cover.  In addition, the inside pockets will need to be labeled.

Language Arts (or LA)

Inside Left Pocket: Writing

Inside Right Pocket: Shurley

Social Studies

Inside Left Pocket: History/Presidents

Inside Right Pocket: Geography/States and Capitals

Index Cards will be needed in various areas. 300 ct should be adequate.

Caesar's English I - for words and stems (there are 100 total)

Shurley English - for vocabulary words

History - extremely helpful for quiz questions and vocabulary

Presentations - for talking points and important information

States & Capitals - for a study tool

Students need a red pen, blue or black pen, pencil and a pencil sharpener daily.  They may keep several in their organizer binder, but most of their extra supplies should be left at home and brought in as needed.

It is very beneficial for students to be practicing their typing skills.  This will make the most use of class time and produce neat work.  There are many free typing apps available.  Find one that works for you.

We are going to have a great year!  I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, September 5th!
